How Eroumen began

In the beginning…

It all began with a question – “How can I read the Old Testament in the original?”

This was the question a member of the Theology group at Ss Peter and Paul Church, Buckingham , asked in the autumn of 2012.

The Hebrew Group was set up and started in January 2013. Five members were all keen to learn this strange (at least it was strange to us) language.

Twelve keen students

Inspired by this, a New Testament Greek Group began in 2014, with 12 keen students.

So now Hebrew and Greek were covered, but Latin was feeling left out. Several prospective students asked if a Latin Group could be set up. In 2014, courses in Ecclesiastical Latin and Classical Latin commenced.

At about the same time some other prospective students expressed an interest in learning New Testament Greek, so a second beginners’ course was planned which started in January 2015.

Conference time

By 2015, students were confident enough in their language skills to attend the first Eroumen Conference which was held in High Lea in Hertfordshire.

This was a great success and the subsequent conferences took place every year from 2016 to the most recent one in 2021.

Zooming in

In 2020 Zoom lessons were set up to do teaching offsite and offer the courses to people outside the local area.

Zoom lessons continue and have opened up Eroumen to students around the UK.

From learning to letters (and more)

After learning the grammar of New Testament Greek our students were keen to use this new knowledge so we have have been reading and studying several books from the New Testament. In particular:

  • Epistle to the Galatians
  • Acts of the Apostles – Paul’s missionary journeys
  • Epistles of John
  • Epistle of Jude
  • Epistle to the Philippians
  • Epistle to the Colossians

In addition to studying the New Testament we have also ventured into the Septuagint and Patristics.
