A note about Hebrews 1:1

In the AV the first verse of Hebrews runs like this:

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake unto our forefathers in times past through the prophets, hath in these last days spoken to us through his son

This is not, strictly speaking, an accurate rendition of the original. Here is my version:

At many times and in various ways God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets, but in these last days has spoken through his son.

Though the second version is a more accurate reflection of the original than the first version, in that the word order has been more carefully preserved, I nonetheless think that the AV version is vastly superior.

In the AV the sentence begins with the word ‘God’ and ends with the word ‘son’ and thus, in this one sentence, we have a picture of the Trinity; God the Father begetting the Son and the Holy Ghost proceeding.

I think it is a magnificent piece of work to convey the mystery of the Trinity in one sentence.
